Using MySQL in a Hosting Environment

Most of you know that MySQL is a database server that is heavy-duty.  It can be used with PHP and other assorted software languages and is a part of the family known as LAMP which stands for Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP.

No matter what type of data you are using, it will need to be stored on a database whether it is records about your customers or about your products.  A database management system is required to add, access and edit your database along with processing the data that is stored.  The MySQL is at the top of the market, being known for being one of the best and most comprehensive packages available today.  The MySQL databases are capable of communicating with one another instead of just being stored in big lump of data.  This is known as a relationship database management system and your  MySQL can handle this task.

MySQL can be run as a server in both a local device and a remote server.  You just need to know the name or the correct IP address to the server of your MySQL web hosting provider to gain access to it for your databases.  From there you can input the various commands to interact with your databases.  These commands are simply written on various programming scripts.

When deciding on a web hosting provider for MySQL, You need to take into account the amount of time their server is up, the backup and redundancy systems, email and bandwidth issues also need to be addressed.  Beyond these normal factors, you should also take into consideration some additional things.

  1. Databases:  When looking for a MySQL web hosting provider, you already know that databases will be a big part of your web-presence.  Make sure you find a MySQL web hosting provider that offers enough different data structures that you will need.  If a web host provider is saying that they are a MySQL host, they must offer owners of many websites at least five different databases.
  2. Interface:  You will get to know your databases on a personal level and work with them frequently. The web hosting provider you choose should have the MySQL user in mind and design it’s admin panel accordingly.   Allowing access to many people should be easy to do because you may depend on various people to add data to your databases.  You want to be able to restrict access to only the database that they need to access and Cpanel has a good administrative dashboard  for MySQL databases.
  3. CRON support:  CRON’s allow you to execute scripts for routine tasks that are run at different intervals.  The MySQL hosting provider you choose should allow access for you to set up and manage CRON jobs right from your admin control panel.  Setting up a CRON with a script is a great way to run preventive maintenance routines regularly.
  4. PHP:  PHP is the most common script for a MySQL database.  MySQL hosting providers with PHP extensions enabled can be more aggravating than helpful to you.  Please check into your prospective MySQL host’s PHP capabilities to make sure your database management system and your script language is compatible.  This will save you a lot of time and troubles later on.

Most importantly, if you will be running MySQL databases, make sure the web hosting provider that you choose specializes in MySQL hosting.
